Who's Afraid
of Virginia Woolf

written by Edward Albee
directed by Alex Martin
August 2016
The People’s Absurdist Theatre

The Black Sheep Cafe, Springfield, IL

From a mix of script requirements, the director's decisions, and tradition; I was expected to create sets depicting the living room in a house built in the 1930s or '40s, owned by a New England college, and that was being inhabited by a modern couple during the early '60s. Within that context, I designed with the idea that the inhabitants (not owners) of the house are trapped and angry against the house and the society it represents.

Color Palette

I chose colors to contrast the characters George and Martha from their surroundings. The house and house-guests are colored in a mix of mild blue and sunny yellow embellished with bronze and off-white.  On the other hand, George and Martha prefer the colors black and red to reflect themselves: bold, passionate, and aggressive.
